Detroit Lions vs. Tim Tebow

I’m a Detroit sports fan through and through. If the team is from Detroit I root for them. It doesn’t matter what sport it is, even if I don’t like it, if the team is from Detroit I cheer for them.

But occasionally there are a few players that I like. I like Tim Tebow. And not just because of his skills as a football player, but because he is a strong Christian.

I’m skeptical about all the hype that Tim Tebow has received since joining the NFL. I don’t want him to change because of the professional sports world. It’s hard on the athletes. One thing that they do wrong and their name gets smeared. Look at Michael Phelps, he gets caught with a bong in one photograph and he loses almost all of his endorsements. They don’t want that to be the face of their companies. I don’t want Tebow to end up that way.

The Lions have had their ups and their downs in the past. They’ve gone 0-16. This team doesn’t even know what the playoffs looks like because they haven’t made a postseason appearance since 1999. But they are giving fans hope that maybe 2011 is their year.

The Lions are proving to Tebow that professional football is different than college. As I’m typing this the Lions are up 45-10. It’s a game that can easily go one way. The Broncos are lucky that they got the win against Miami. If Tebow hadn’t figured his stuff out, they would have lost and maybe Kyle Orton would be starting today. But I can’t say that I would want Orton to start. I would like to see Tebow start and play well from start to finish. His opening drive was great, and 45 unanswered points later, Tebow has a touchdown pass.

I would love to cheer for Tebow today. Because on any other day I would cheer for him. I want him as a strong Christian to be successful in the NFL, but today he’s the enemy.

Good Luck Tim. Show the NFL that you’re better than they are and you’ll keep your faith. Until then, whether I think you’re a great football player or not, I’m going to stick to my roots and cheer for the Lions.
