#thanks: Indianapolis

The more I thought about what I was most thankful for today, the more I realized it is the new city I call home.

In May, I chose to pack up everything I owned (pretty much) and move to Indianapolis to start grad school in the fall. Since August, I’ve been on this amazing adventure and I’ve fallen in love with this city.

Most of the time, I feel like I’ve chosen the right city to be in and then basketball season starts, the Pacers overwhelm the sports news and I remember how little I know about basketball and how much of a fan I am not. Thankfully, I have friends who will help me be a better basketball fan and I’m planning to go to at least one game this season.

This isn’t the best city to be a baseball fan in because there is no major league team in the city. They are host to the Indianapolis Indians, the Triple A affiliate for the Pittsburgh Pirates. I look forward to spring when they are playing at Victory Field (just across the street from where I work downtown).

I love that I can look out the window of my apartment and see the lights from the skyscrapers of downtown. I love that I work right next to the NCAA. I love that I can walk around downtown and feel safe, not feeling like every second I have to look over my shoulder. I love that my adventures aren’t limited to midnight runs to Meijer or Wal-Mart. While those adventures were fun during my undergrad it’s definitely different to go to the bar after class and spend more time talking about sports.

Indianapolis is a place that a year ago I wasn’t even planning on moving to and here I am and I’m happy, thankful, blessed. This city is going to provide me with the experiences that until recently I had only dreamed about.

Right now, being on my own in this city, there is no place I’d rather be (except maybe in a city with a larger market baseball team…)
