#thanks: spud bud

Most of you are probably looking at that title and going, “What the heck is a spud bud?” Well let me tell you. Spud bud is the nickname that I have for my brother Jordan.

And with that, I’ve apparently started the “I’m thankful for my family portion of the month” (yesterday was my mom after all).

Jordan is two-years younger than me and way smarter than I am. I say that because he’s naturally intelligent. I have to read books and study. Growing up, I may have been slightly envious because he was in the “gifted and talented” program far before I was.

But then I remembered that because I was older than him that he’d be known as Megan’s brother. However that didn’t happen as often as I would have liked – I think it even got to the point that he was so much more popular than I was that people were referring to me as Jordan’s sister…hmmm.

We have always had this interesting relationship. We fought a lot and not just screaming matches. We threw things at each other (as the story goes one time I apparently threw a cowboy boot at his head, I remember it differently) and he wasn’t afraid to use his black belt skills to put me in my place.

There are times that I think it was hard for him growing up because, after the divorce, it was me, him and mom.

College changed everything though. The moment I was gone, we didn’t fight as much. There are still times that when we’re both at home for long periods of time – Christmas Break – that things can escalate pretty quickly. We don’t throw things at each other and we no longer hit each other, but our voices can get up there in volume.

The best part is that we talk more – about our everyday lives and the things (or people) we care about the most.

Now, yesterday’s post about my mom was by far the most viewed post on this blog and Jordan found some inspiration from it.

He’s started his own blog, but one of his first posts: #thanks: hardships. I saw the title of the post and called him right away. He stole the heading for my monthly series. I’m pretty sure I called him a butt stink before I even said hello.

I don’t mind though because what he wrote absolutely blew me away (and I’m supposed to be the writer in the family). I strongly encourage you to check it out. I don’t want to steal his thunder and post anything on here, though.

When he puts his mind to something it always turns out beautifully. He tries to master as many skills as he can from playing the guitar to recording his own music and now starting a blog.

I don’t know if he knows this or not (and I hope he reads this post, so he can know) but as his big sister, I am so proud of the man he’s becoming. So absolutely proud.

He may be 335 miles (or about 5 hours and 5 minutes) away from me, but he will always be my annoying younger brother, but also by far one of the most treasured people in my life.

It makes me smile that he has no problem telling me that he loves me when we end a phone conversation and that we can do crazy things like take ridiculous selfies at our dad’s wedding. We took some good pictures, too.

Love you bud.
