I recently started working out the YMCA just down the street from my house. I bike there everyday and work out on the equipment and then I bike home. Earlier on this week while I was there, I noticed they had a bunch of used books for sale. I perused the selection and ended up leaving the Y with 5 new books for $3.
One of those books was “The Wednesday Letters.” Early this morning, let’s say about 12:30 a.m., I decided to pick this book up and read a little bit of it before I went to bed. Jokes. I was so engrossed in the book that I had to finish it. That whole “I’ll just read one more chapter before I go to sleep” thing didn’t really work since I said it after ever chapter. Now 342 pages later (it was a large print book!), I can put “The Wednesday Letters” on my read bookshelf.
The premise of the book is that a husband and wife who have been married for 39 years pass away in the night together, much like Noah and Ali from “The Notebook.” But there’s more – the husband promised to write a letter to his wife every Wednesday that they were together. When their children discover the letters and begin to go through them they uncover a family secret that turns their world upside down. It’s not until about page 261 that everything comes together, but the wait was worth it.
I was in tears by the end. It was romantic. Who wouldn’t love to have their significant other send them a letter once every week over the course of their marriage? It’s something I’m going to talk to my future husband about doing. I, honestly, really enjoyed this book.
And even though it’s 5:05 a.m. and I’m fairly confident the sky is becoming lighter outside my window as the sun begins to make its appearance and that there are people all around my neighborhood waking up to begin their work days, I’m just finishing my day.
What little sleep I get today wil be absolutely worth it because “The Wednesday Letters” is a book I won’t be forgetting about.
