There is nothing more exciting than a record breaking game and being in the stands is indescribable. That’s how I felt as I watched Doug Fister, of the Detroit Tigers, pitch 9 consecutive strikeouts in the last home game of the 2012 regular season.
Not only was it the last game at home for the year but it also was the last game of what turned out to be a sweep of the Kansas City Royals.
And the best part is that Fister had no idea that he broke not only the team record, but tied the American League record. Prince Fielder tried to tell him after it happened and the inning ended, but was unsuccessful and then the rest of the guys in the clubhouse told him. Still, as the fans were giving him a standing ovation he had no idea what was going on. He was even more confused when Fielder was telling him to step off the mound and let the moment sink in.
Congratulations to Fister. He’s proven himself on numerous occasions – I still haven’t forgotten the amazing command he had of the mound after he became a Tiger at the trade deadline in 2011.
