I have this totally awesome internship with the National Federation of State High School Associations or the NFHS, as we’re better known.
This internship kind of fell in my lap. When I decided to move to Indianapolis, I typed “sports writing internships” in Google to see what would pop up. This internship was one of them.
I came to Indianapolis putting all my eggs in the basket of getting this position. I guess it’s a good thing I did get the position because my back up (transferring from the Kroger I was spending my summer working at to one near my apartment) fell through the second I said I wanted to transfer.
I spent forever selecting the clips I would submit and spent even more time updating my website, my resume and so on before I was confident in applying.
I moved to Indianapolis on August 12. I had an interview with the NFHS on August 13. In the morning of August 14, I was offered the position.
So now, I’m the publications intern. I get to write everyday. I get to read about high school sports everyday. It’s pretty close to perfect.
I get up in the morning and go to work and deal with sports. I come home and turn on ESPN and read about sports. I go to classes and learn about how to be a sports journalist. If you see a common theme here, that’s right, because it’s sports.
The biggest blessing though is that my internship is paid. Most of them are not. My friend Jon once said it’s slave labor. Getting paid to write about sports is definitely something I could get used to.
